If we all had the time, we would get our food fresh every day in order to prepare the best meals possible. However, shopping daily isn’t practical for most people. And when we do purchase, if we don’t use all the ingredients, they start to fade quickly. Therefore being able to store food in a manner that preserves its freshness, aroma, vitamins – and even appearance – is vital for any household who values what they put on the dinner table.
But isn’t a refrigerator just a box to keep things cool? Definitely not! Our Liebherr fridges are built with the knowledge that temperature alone isn’t going to lock in that much-prized freshness. It’s also crucial “how” the food is stored.
How do we do it? Firstly, since we understand that when food is stored just above freezing (0°C) it stays in its optimum state, we created a precision-based technology called BioFresh. That technology provides Liebherr fridges with BioFresh compartments which maintain the temperature just above 0°C. That’s a temperature that most conventional refrigerators cannot achieve and evenly maintain.
The second reason why BioFresh Technology is so effective is from the storage compartments created specifically to preserve the life and nutrition of fresh food. While fruits and vegetables require some moisture to maintain their crispness, items like cheese and dried fruits need very arid conditions to stay fresh. Those moisture differences are what “make or break” the effectiveness of your food storage. That’s where the BioFresh compartments play a critical role; they allow the humidity in each compartment to be regulated via a sliding scale – from HydroSafe (more moist) to DrySafe (more dry).
Between the precise and constant ‘just above’ freezing temperature and the moisture control in each BioFresh compartment, your food’s nutrients will be preserved and life prolonged. It’s this versatility that means, no matter what food you have, no matter how delicate or demanding, you can store them in their ideal condition.

When the BioFresh-Safe compartment is set to “HydroSafe”, the humidity increases. This allows you to store unpacked fruits and vegetables (including salads and even fresh mushrooms!) and rest easy knowing they’ll remain fresh and crisp. And because the precision temperature control hovers just above 0°C, your items will not freeze, even in the higher humidity atmosphere.
To make the BioFresh-Safe a more arid environment, adjust setting to DrySafe and the humidity will drop. This lower humidity compartment is now ideal for the storage of fish, meat, milk products and dried fruits. In this type of dry storage, these packaged items will stay fresh for much longer than if stored in a conventional refrigerator. Some cheeses can even be store for up to 100 days!
Cooking Tip! While BioFresh temperatures are ideal for the storage, they aren’t ideal for cooking and consumption. Remember, cheese releases its aroma after it’s been allowed to warm up to room temperature. And unless you enjoy very cold fruit, allow them to rise in temperature as well, so their flavours intensify. Lastly, you should also bring the temperature of meat to room temperature before cooking. So in order to enjoy their maximum flavour, remove the food from your Liebherr fridge prior to preparation; this allows them time to warm up naturally. However, at all other times, leave them in their BioFresh compartments for their ideal storage.

The right balance of humidity and temperature is the key to effective longer-term fresh food storage. But since the demands of food can be quite different, knowing those different combinations are vital for storage effectiveness. For example, tropical fruit prefers higher humidity, while fish and seafood should be stored in a dry environment at a constant freezing point. Thankfully, with the flexibly of BioFresh’s adjustable compartments, optimal storage conditions can be achieved for any type of food! Customised food storage with BioFresh
Tropical fruits are grown in humid and sunny conditions, so just storing then in a cold environment is not enough to keep them in a fresh state. They should be stored individually in a BioFresh HydroSafe, for higher humidity. What’s more, because they’re from temperate climates, allowing them to warm up to room temperature ensures their aromas and flavours are at their best. The ability to adjust the moisture setting also ensures delicate fruit can be stored for a long time, too!
Meat and dairy products
We all know that long term storage of meat isn’t easy, but not in a BioFresh DrySafe compartment. The low humidity and near-freezing temperature means they’ll maintain their fresh state for a significantly longer time than a conventional refrigerator. This type of arid condition is also ideal for the long-term storage of cheese.
Because vegetables have high-water content, they require a humid environment to stay fresh and crisp. Having them stored in the BioFresh HydroSafe compartment ensures a constant ‘just above’ 0°C temperature setting, as well as the moisture required for optimum storage. By hovering just above freezing, it means your vegetables won’t freeze or dry out, yet will maintain all their vital nutrients.
There’s a good reason why seafood dealers store their goods on ice: freezing point is their optimum storage state. Because fish and seafood can spoil quickly at the wrong temperature, it’s imperative they are kept at a constant frigid temperature. This makes the BioFresh DrySafe the most suitable solution, with a precise storage temperature of 0°C and a very arid environment. This means that seafood like tilapia, barramundi, or even abalone and cuttlefish, will remain fresh for a considerably longer time than any other refrigerator.
